How to Prepare for a Mammogram
If you are using a new test facility for your mammogram, ask your doctor if you should bring copies of previous mammograms with you. Radiologists often like to compare new images with previous ones.
On the day of your mammogram, do not use any deodorants, powers, lotions, perfumes or creams on your breast or underarm areas. Chemicals in these products may create abnormal images on the mammogram that could be misinterpreted as abnormalities.
Since you will need to undress from the waist up, wear a two piece outfit.
During a mammogram the breasts need to be compressed for a few seconds between two plastic plates. This is necessary to provide a clear image of the breast tissue.
If you have tender breasts, you may wish to schedule your mammogram a few days after you have finished your menstrual period. At this time breasts may be less tender. Also, ibuprofin or other pain relievers taken an hour before a mammogram may alleviate pain.
In addition, you may wish to avoid coffee or other caffeinated beverages for two days prior to your mammogram.
And what to do after…
If you felt pain or severe discomfort during your mammogram, be sure to tell your doctor.
He or she may want to refer you to a center where contour mammograms are available.
These have been found to be more comfortable for some women.
A few days after your mammogram either call the test facility or your doctor for the results. Even if you are given a preliminary result on the day of your mammogram, check back for the final reading.
