Columbia St. Mary’s Hospice

Posted: March 1, 2006

The concept of hospice was derived from the word's original definition: a shelter or resting place for travelers on a physical journey. Columbia St. Mary's Hospice provides a place where your loved one can find the care and comfort needed for the end-of-life journey.

Our care and treatment are based on hospice philosophy:
Hospice affirms life by providing comfort for persons in the last phase of an incurable disease. Hospice does not hasten nor prolong death, but assists your loved one in living this stage of life as fully as possible. Hospice exists in the belief that, through the care of a sensitive and knowledgeable team, your loved one – and your family – are supported and prepared for death and for the time that follows.

Leaders in hospice care, established in 1980
Columbia St. Mary's Hospice is a state-licensed inpatient unit. The program is designed to treat the individual patient, not the disease. Our staff focuses on your loved one's physical, spiritual, emotional, and social needs, as well as the needs of your family during this difficult time.

We treat the patient and family together. The patient and family define their own needs, their own goals, and their own quality of life. The care provided is palliative care, which is care aimed solely at relieving symptoms and discomfort in order to enhance the quality of life. We also provide a respite program for the medically stable patient.

A warm, homelike setting
Columbia St. Mary's Hospice offers an environment designed to provide comfort, convenience, and consideration for your loved one, family, and friends. The unit is warm, homelike, and inviting with its own family lounge and kitchen. The private rooms are furnished to accommodate family members who wish to stay overnight. Family meals can be arranged in the hospice dining area. Favorite foods can be brought from home. We offer 24-hour visiting hours and pet visitation.

Central to our mission and vision are Columbia St. Mary's core values:

  • Respect: High regard for the worth, dignity, and uniqueness of each person.
  • Commitment to excellence: A commitment to the highest standards delivered with competence and pride.
  • Integrity: Honesty, openness, and sincerity.
  • Creativity: Actions that are marked by innovation, flexibility, openness to change, and imagination.
  • Service: Connecting with another person through an act of assistance or benefit.

Our hospice team
In order to give the special kind of care and support your loved one needs, we provide a team approach. Our team includes the Hospice Medical Director, a social worker, a chaplain, the bereavement coordinator, hospice volunteers, and nurses.

Each member of our team has received special education and mentoring in hospice care, symptom control, and grief and loss. In addition, each member contributes skills and talents that include experience in alternative therapies, oncology, hospice home care, and other unique backgrounds. Several nurses have earned the Hospice and Palliative Care RN certification.

Supportive counsel
Social workers and chaplains are available. Your minister, rabbi, or priest is also encouraged to provide spiritual support and comfort.

If you or your family needs support following your loss, it is available to you through our Hospice for at least a year.

How to initiate a referral
Anyone can refer a patient to hospice: a physician, a social worker, a friend, or a patient and family themselves. There is a staff person available 24-hours to process the referral and answer all your questions. If you currently have a hospice home care agency providing care, the home care nurse will initiate the referral for you.

Insurance coverage
Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance pay for hospice in the inpatient unit. There are criteria to meet and the staff can answer all your questions.

Hospice home care
If you need to arrange hospice home care, we can assist you. We have relationships with many of the hospice home care agencies.
