A Global Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment
Scott Tannehill, M.D., Radiation Oncologist, Columbia St. Mary’s

In a move that will significantly and positively impact cancer and neurosurgical patients throughout the region, Columbia St. Mary’s has become the first cancer center in Wisconsin to use the new Trilogy™ Stereotactic System. Recently added to Columbia St. Mary’s comprehensive cancer services, Trilogy strengthens the facility’s leadership position in radiation oncology now and for the future. The system places Columbia St. Mary’s on par with other renowned cancer centers across the country.
Trilogy treats tumors with advanced image-guided radiation. At the core of the system is a linear accelerator radiation delivery machine that rotates around the patient to deliver radiotherapy from various angles. A CT scanner built into the machine allows physicians to precisely pinpoint the cancer and minimize the damage to normal surrounding organs. This improved control over how and where radiation is administered translates into faster treatments, fewer side effects, greater patient comfort and improved cancer treatment outcomes.
Unlike other image-guided radiation treatment machines which are restricted to one function, Trilogy is also designed for stereotactic radiosurgery, a specialty treatment which delivers a single and very precisely aimed large dose of radiation to a tumor. Stereotactic radiosurgery is most commonly used for tumors in the brain, but Trilogy technology opens the door for use of this treatment in other parts of the body as well.
Ultimately, Trilogy expands the options for patients. The system does everything the Gamma Knife, Cyber Knife and Tomotherapy machines do, and more, by combining the best of several different therapeutic tools. The system allows for the delivery of a full spectrum of treatments, all on one machine. Columbia St. Mary’s radiation oncology staff can utilize the most appropriate treatment for cancer anywhere in the body.
Columbia St. Mary’s is committed to bringing the most advanced cancer-fighting technology to the people in Southeastern Wisconsin. We're helping cancer patients become cancer survivors.
