Support Programs
Posted: March 1, 2006
Cancer support groups are meetings for people with cancer and those touched by cancer. These groups allow you and your loved ones to talk with others facing the same problems. Support groups often have a lecture as well as time to talk. Almost all groups have a leader who runs the meeting. The leader can be someone with cancer or a trained counselor.
You may think that a support group is not right for you. Maybe you think that a group won't help or that you don't want to talk with others about your feelings. Or perhaps you are afraid that the meetings will make you sad or depressed.
It may be good to know that many people find support groups very helpful. People in the groups often:
- Talk about what it's like to have cancer
- Help each other feel better, more hopeful, and not so alone
- Learn about what's new in cancer treatment
- Share tips about ways to cope with cancer
Columbia St. Mary’s support groups
If you or someone you love has cancer, you know the depth of emotions that accompany the cancer experience. At Columbia St. Mary's, we understand those emotions and do all we can to provide you and your loved ones with as much support as possible, for as long as you need it. One of the many ways we do this is by offering free support groups.
A support group provides an opportunity for you and your family to talk and share your feelings with others who have cancer. These relaxed, informal groups are open to anyone who feels the desire to "connect" with persons who understand what it is like to have cancer or to love someone who has cancer.
The staff at Columbia St. Mary's invites you and your family to join us for one or more of our very special cancer support groups.
