New River Woods Outpatient Center Provides Comprehensive GI Services

with Patrick Regan, M.D., Gastroenterology, Columbia St. Mary’s

Posted: April 1, 2006

Outstanding service, convenient hours, and the latest technology are among the benefits patients will experience at the new River Woods Outpatient Center located at 375 W. River Woods Parkway in Glendale.

The center offers comprehensive gastrointestinal (GI) services involving a wide variety of illnesses associated with the intestinal tract. These include peptic ulcers, malignancies, reflux and heartburn, pancreatic and liver ailments, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The center’s staff includes board-certified gastroenterologists, and with the most advanced technology in imaging, endoscopies and biopsies, River Woods offers a range of preventative and therapeutic measures to care for patients. We can facilitate a full scope of GI diagnostic procedures from colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy to upper endoscopy.

With comfort and privacy as the key features throughout the GI department at River Woods, rooms have been designed so family members can stay with the patient before and after the procedure.

A Preventative Focus
The GI staff at River Woods is committed to educating people about preventative screenings. Every year, 145,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer and 50,000 of them die. This is a highly preventable disease because we have up to 10 years before a benign polyp mutates to cancer. Yet, less than 50% of adults 50 years and older get any form of screening.

Although colonoscopy requires some patient prep the night before, the procedure itself is painless and requires no hospital stay. The first screening should be done when you are 50 years old, or sooner if there is a family history of colon cancer. Follow-up screenings depend on general health, family history and what is observed during the initial colonoscopy. If polyps are detected, they are removed during the procedure and examined for malignancy.

Upper endoscopy is often the procedure of choice to evaluate the small intestines. It enables your doctor to look inside the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestine. The procedure is helpful in discovering the reasons for swallowing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, reflux, bleeding, indigestion, and abdominal dysfunction or chest pain.

Other River Woods Services
In addition to GI services, the new center also offers medical imaging, surgery and urgent care services.

The medical imaging services at River Woods include open MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), which eliminates the claustrophobic effects of traditional (closed) MRIs. Full-field digital mammography is available for breast cancer screening.

Columbia St. Mary’s is continuously working to provide patient-centered care in prevention, early detection and treatment of digestive diseases that also includes comprehensive GI services at the Columbia St. Mary - Ozaukee campus. A new GI Center will be part of the Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital under construction in Milwaukee. That facility is planned for completion in 2010.
