Columbia St. Mary’s Building Projects

Posted: Oct. 1, 2006

The new Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee will reinvent a patient's experience from the moment he or she enters our doors. It will integrate the operations of our current Columbia and St. Mary’s Hospitals; replacing two aging facilities with one highly efficient, cost-effective facility.

We'll lower our operating costs, while setting new standards for health care delivery, not only in our community, but also in the nation.

Many innovative features have been incorporated into the hospital’s design to minimize stress for patients, give them more control over their environment and facilitate recovery. These features are based on evidence-based design—the guiding principle for this hospital project—that uses architectural and design elements to improve patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and enhance efficiency.

The design includes patient exercise facilities, access to nature and gardens, and a safe, secure, relaxing environment.

Designed for comfort and family participation
Every patient room will be large and private, and most will enjoy a Lake Michigan view. Within each 325-square-foot room, home-like family areas will promote longer visitations. Overnight accommodations will be available in each room for family or friends.

Patients will be able to control their own room temperature and lighting. They can access their personal health record information on monitors within their rooms. Internet access also will be available.

Patients will be able to eat when and what they want (within the confines of their illnesses). Family members also may cook meals at the food preparation area on each floor. Each patient room will include a refrigerator.

Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Ozaukee
The expansion of our Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Ozaukee will enable it to become a full-service hospital. The project includes a new in-patient tower, a 30,000-square-foot addition to the medical office building and major renovations to existing diagnostic and treatment facilities.

With complete services and expanded patient rooms, Ozaukee County residents will continue to receive high-quality, full-service health care close to home.

This is the future of health care. And it's taking place at Columbia St. Mary's today.
